POTTER’S REPLACEMENT: Reasons why Chelsea appoints Frank Lampard as caretaker manager

POTTER’S REPLACEMENT: Reasons why Chelsea appoints Frank Lampard as caretaker manager

Under the canopy of exploring options to replace Graham Potter. Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the end of the season, according to The Athletic.

The Blues legend accepted the short deal, and he will take charge of the managerial position until June.

It’s said that Bruno Saltor didn’t want to be the caretaker, simply because he’s close to Graham Potter.

As a result, Lampard would be in charge of Wolverhampton on Saturday for his first game at Stamford Bridge.

Interestingly, Ashley Cole, Joe Edwards, and Chris Jones will join Lampard, as his backroom staff.

In the process of searching for a new permanent manager, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali want Frank to manage the squad.

Luis Enrique has been interviewed by the West London club, and they reportedly like his presentation.

Meanwhile, Julian Nagelsmann remains the favorite, however, he desires to take a break for now.

Therefore, Lampard is doing Chelsea a massive favor by coming in to rescue the club, until they find a new manager.

According to several reports, Luis Enrique wants the job 100%, as he likes the club’s project and their players.

But there are some people on board pushing hard for Julian Nagelsmann, which is why the Blues chose to calm down.

Lampard was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, during Chelsea’s Premier League game against Liverpool.

There are many things attached to his return as a caretaker manager, both for himself and the West London club.

Frank Lampard managerial stats in the Premier League

95 appearances
37 wins
19 draws
39 defeats
38.95% win rate
137 goals scored
136 goals conceded

Even though the Englishman hasn’t been really successful in the league as a manager, that’s not the reason they appointed him.

Profile-wise, Frank can obviously do better than Graham Potter, he can install unity and make the squad great again.

The former Chelsea player was recently sacked by Everton, claiming 35 points in 38 matches with the Toffees.

Apparently, those are awful records for a manager, but his return will definitely help the West London club.

What do the fans think about Frank Lampard?

The majority of the Blues fanbase is actually glad about the appointment, because they know what the Englishman can bring to the club.

Despite the fact that Lampard was sacked for Thomas Tuchel, the fans are happy about his return as an interim coach.

Of course, Frank loves Chelsea, and he knows what it takes to play for the West London club.

The Blues are currently in 11th position in the Premier League table, so nothing matters at the moment, except the UEFA Champions League.

Outside of his managerial statistics, the fans believe Lampard can unite the squad again because he loves the club.

Graham Potter failed to control the dressing room, according to Kai Havertz. Obviously, Frank can make that happen.

The players are expected to listen to him, because he still has some players who love him in the squad.

The likes of Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell, and others wouldn’t want to betray him.

Can Frank Lampard really win the UEFA Champions League?

Obviously, the Englishman would want to win against Real Madrid, so as to revive his managerial career.

After the Wolverhampton game on Saturday, it’s expected to be Lampard vs. Carlo Ancelotti in the UCL.

After seeing the Los Blancos destroying Barcelona on Wednesday, in their Copa del Rey semi-finals.

They have the ability to win over the West London club at the Santiago Bernabéu in the competition.

Nevertheless, Lampard can actually surprise football fans, he can make it work against the La Liga side in both legs.

In 2020-2021, Chelsea were unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League group-stage under Lampard.

He single-handedly built the squad Thomas Tuchel used to win the UCL. Therefore, he can try his best in the competition this season.

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali aren’t actually expecting a massive result from the Englishman.

However, Frank would want to take the job seriously, win games in the Premier League, and perhaps defeat Real Madrid.

His managerial career is currently in shambles after his statistics at Everton. So he would definitely want to revive his career as a gaffer.

Lampard was denied the UCL knockout stage in 2021. However, he will be in charge to face the Los Blancos.

Amazingly, Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge of Chelsea in 2021 was against Wolverhampton.

And he won the UEFA Champions League that year, defeating Manchester City in the final in Porto.

In the same vein, Frank’s first match in charge as an interim coach will be against Wolverhampton on Saturday.

Therefore, never rule Lampard out of the competition, history may repeat itself, the Blues could win the UCL with him.

Chelsea’s players, who would play many games under Frank Lampard

  • Mason Mount

Lampard is a huge fan of Mount, which is very obvious. Therefore, the Englishman will definitely feature heavily under him.

Mason hasn’t been playing regularly at Chelsea because of his contract issues. However, everything will come back to normal.

  • Thiago Silva

Frank signed the Brazilian centre-back from Paris Saint-Germain under his first spell as a manager at Chelsea.

Thiago Silva showed his gratitude when he was sacked in 2021. Of course, the defender will play back-to-back under him.

Frank Lampard and Chelsea players

  • Reece James

Lampard was the one who unleashed the beast in James, he gave the English right-back enough time to shine.

Even though Reece is irreplaceable under any manager at Chelsea, Frank would want to bet on him defensively.

  • Ben Chilwell

The English gaffer signed Chilwell from Leicester City, because he’s his fan, and he likes his style of play.

Lampard believed in the English left-back, and he took his chances on him, Ben will definitely be part of his dangerous weapons.

  • Raheem Sterling

As an English player, who has the ability to cause havoc inside the opponent’s box. Lampard will also count on Sterling.

Of course, the former Manchester City player would be glad to play under him, having been his countryman.

  • Hakim Ziyech

Lampard’s 4-3-3 formation suits Ziyech’s style of play, as he was the one who signed him from Ajax.

Hakim played his best games at Chelsea under Frank. Therefore, the Moroccan wizard will also feature severally until the end of 2022-2023.

  • Edouard Mendy

Kepa Arrizabalaga may go back to being the second goalkeeper in the squad, because Lampard likes Mendy.

He signed him from Ligue 1 during his time at Stamford Bridge, and the Senegalese is now fit and available to play.

  • Mykhailo Mudryk

Lampard tried to sign Mudryk during his time at Everton, which means he apparently likes the Ukrainian Neymar.

Even though Mudryk is struggling at the moment, Frank may help him establish himself at Chelsea.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The English gaffer doesn’t play a false No.9 like Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, as he wants a standard striker.

He used Tammy Abraham amazingly during his time, so definitely Aubameyang may get some minutes under him in the league.

What are the reasons why Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard as caretaker manager?

1. Stabilizing the fanbase

Of course, the fanbase got divided under Graham Potter, particularly when he started to fall apart with the players.

Almost all of Chelsea’s fans love Lampard, because he’s one of their legends and has passion for the West London club.

Therefore, appointing him means bringing back positive energy and stabilizing the fanbase. As a result, the next manager won’t have any issues.

Frank’s return to Chelsea doesn’t revolve around getting results, it comes down to bringing the fans together.

2. Getting the dressing room together

Well, Kai Havertz confirmed that the whole dressing room wasn’t fully behind Graham Potter, according to Nizaar Kinsella of Standard Sport.

Therefore, the Blues appointed Lampard to bring unity to the dressing room, since he’s one of the club’s legends.

Almost all of the players like Frank, because he signed most of them to Stamford Bridge during his time there.

As an interim coach, Lampard will ensure the dressing room’s morale doesn’t get worse for the next manager.

3. Having passion for the club

Apparently, the likes of Mudryk, Madueke, Badiashile, and others don’t know what it means to play for Chelsea.

Lampard will make them have passion for the West London club, fighting for the badge on the pitch.

At least, the Blues have almost 17 new players, so it’s Frank’s job to teach them what it takes to fight for the club.

The English gaffer always wants the best for Chelsea, he knows how to get the players on board.

4. Playing young players

Lampard is never afraid of playing youth, as evidenced by what he did with James, Mount, Abraham, and Tomori.

Since Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are building for the future, they want someone who can trust the young players.

David Datro Fofana is most likely to get enough playing time under Frank, because he has many things in common with Drogba.

This is another reason why Chelsea appointed Lampard as their interim head coach until the end of the season in June.

5. Offloading old players

Lampard will have to trim the squad, weed out old players who don’t have futures at the West London club.

Graham Potter was so unfortunate because he tried to manage 33 players in the squad, which is too much for him.

However, Frank will be able to offload or cut off some old players, showing them the exit door in the summer transfer window.

In line with that, either Luis Enrique or Julian Nagelsmann won’t have to manage more than 33 players.

Too many players will definitely cause problems in the dressing room. But Lampard is most likely to sort out everything before the next campaign.
